Important Note: The symptoms described here can also occur with other eye diseases. Only an ophthalmologist can make a reliable diagnosis through a thorough examination.
The Insidious Onset: Early Signs
Another early sign is the prolonged adaptation time of the eyes to different light conditions. For example, when you move from a bright room to a dark one, your eyes may take significantly longer to adjust than they used to.
Central Vision: Where AMD Strikes First
The macula is responsible for sharp, central vision – exactly the area we need for reading, recognizing faces, and for detailed work. As AMD progresses, it first becomes noticeable in this central field of vision. Peripheral vision, on the other hand, typically remains intact.
Affected individuals often describe that letters seem to 'blur' while reading or that individual letters in a word appear to be missing. Faces of people can be harder to recognize, although the person can still be identified by their voice or posture.
Distorted Vision: An Important Warning Sign
One of the most characteristic symptoms of AMD is so-called Metamorphopsia - the distorted vision of actually straight lines. Door frames, window crosses, or the lines on graph paper suddenly appear wavy, bent, or interrupted.
Metamorphopsia is particularly important to note as it can also be an indication of the transition from dry to wet AMD. If you notice that straight lines suddenly appear more distorted than before, you should see an ophthalmologist immediately.
The Central Shadow: Advanced Symptoms
In advanced stages of dry AMD, a dark or gray spot can develop in the center of the visual field, a so-called scotoma. This area appears like a shadow or a blank spot located exactly where you are looking directly.
However, many affected individuals learn to cope with this limitation by training eccentric viewing - that is, learning to look slightly past the object to capture it with a still functioning part of the retina.
Understand AMD
When to see a doctor?
- Sudden deterioration of vision
- New or increased distortions
- Dark spot in the visual field
Self-Check with the Amsler Grid
The Amsler grid is a simple but valuable tool for regular self-monitoring between doctor's visits. The test only takes a few minutes.
Wichtiger Hinweis
Dieser Test ersetzt keine augenärztliche Untersuchung. Er dient nur zur Selbstkontrolle zwischen den Arztbesuchen.
Was Sie benötigen:
- Ihre Lesebrille (falls Sie eine tragen)
- Gute Beleuchtung
- Etwa 30-40 cm Abstand zum Bildschirm
- Etwas zum Abdecken eines Auges
So funktioniert der Test:
- 1Jedes Auge wird einzeln getestet
- 2Fixieren Sie den weißen Punkt in der Mitte
- 3Beobachten Sie die Linien im Gitter
- 4Dokumentieren Sie Ihre Beobachtungen
The Amsler test does not replace an ophthalmological examination but serves as a supplement to professional preventive care.
